Please consider me in your search for an Emcee.
To evaluate my abilities to prepare material for presentation and delivery to an audience, consider my video application for the position of Traveling Ambassador with Air Transat.
Another example would be this sample of my work as a stand-up comic. This is an early sample of my work in front of a live audience and I sincerely believe that what I always told my students, “Whatever you do, if you do it more you will get better at it,” applies to me in this context, as well.
As a teacher with over 10 years of experience, I am very familiar with developing material for presentation to an audience. My broad education includes an Art Education degree from the University of Alberta. Courses extra to my degree include physics, organic and inorganic chemistry, zoology, history, communications research methods, biology and mathematics. I’m not sure if my presentations would allow for PowerPoints but here is a sample of a PowerPoint created as an art teacher.
Other relevant experience includes my editorial and public relations work with The University of Calgary, Nanaimo Free Press, Nanaimo Business Examiner, Canadian Forest Industries Magazine and T-MAR Industries. My varied duties as Marketing Manager for T-MAR Industries included creating marketing materials and designing and overseeing the installation of the company’s annual show booth at the Truck Logger’s Convention in Vancouver.
After leaving T-MAR, I spent 10 years overseas teaching in Libya, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Norway, the UAE and Japan. In that time, I developed lesson materials using language carefully chosen for ESL students that ranged in age from grade-three to adult. Highlights of this period include the co-authoring of a series of mathematics workbooks and a number of video productions: God is Love, in Al Ain with my Emirati students; a documentary film, which I scripted and narrated, Truck Logging in Africa, in Cameroon and the student-illustrated video of my children’s story, The Apple of Albert’s Eye, in Saudi Arabia, which features my voice-over to begin.
Returning to Canada in 2012, I worked with a web designer to launch my WordPress website highlighting my creative abilities in writing, photography, art, music and video production. I use my website and blog to promote my belief in a more positive world. I have a working knowledge of MS Office, Illustrator and Photoshop and have used a number of video editing programs.
Moving to Prince George, BC in 2013, I served as a Community Support Worker and Residential Care Worker. During this time, I also worked as a volunteer in the Salvation Army’s Food recovery program so I am familiar with the rewards and challenges of volunteering.
In 2021, I moved to Edmonton. Since then, I have worked as a custodian in Mustard Seed operated homeless shelters and, currently, as a second-cook for Horizon North at the MEG Energy site near Conklin, AB. My schedule is two weeks in camp and a week out and I return to site, May 15. In my spare time, continue to make art and write about issues that are important to me. I am a passionate believer in the equality we share with each other and our Creator.
I believe I am an effective and motivating communicator and that the samples provided demonstrate my innate ability to tell a compelling story. I am excited at the possibility of being able to enroll people in positive initiatives and programs. Accordingly, let me suggest we meet to discuss the contribution I could make in the role of Emcee for Goodera. I can be reached in camp through text message and would be available for a Zoom interview.
Sincerely,
James Miller
